Fathers Day and Flowers

Father's Day is about to be celebrated in Australia. The first Sunday in September.

Now traditionally Father's Day is not associated with flowers. Why?

Mainly because fathers grow flowers and so most consider Dad wouldn't like to get flowers as a gift.

This is in many cases not true. Dads are male and many, many males get a real kick out of getting flowers.(They aren't known to include them on their "wish list").

Think about it for a moment. You buy Dad socks and jocks and wonder, what else?

Well, why not take the socks and jocks along to your friendly florist and see what she or he can do with them. You will be amazed and your Dad will feel so special.

There are so many flowers, we florists call "Macho Flowers" Imagine your socks and jocks sitting amongst wonderful big red and orange gerberas, tropicals, like heliconias, gingers, bird of paradise, iris, proteas, banksias in a timber box he can use later to carry his essentials out to the patio to cook on the barbecue.

Timber boxes are wonderful for males in general, but Dads in particular. They come with rope handles, painted, stained, can be made up with flowers and fishing gear, flowers and gear for the barbecue, like an apron, tongs, fork, pot holders, accessories for the bar.

Then, you could buy Dad a toolbox or carry-all, take it along to your friendly florist and with some magnificent macho flowers, a good bottle of red or white wine, or some boutique beer, his favorite brew. His favorite brew could be coffee or tea, new mug or cup, pot or plunger. The list is only limited by your imagination

Let the florist use his or her creativity and your Dad will be amazed at how "creative you have been". The gift is just what he wanted and the flowers are the finishing touch, and he will be delighted.

If you live far away it is the perfect answer to sending your love to your Dad on Father's Day. Your florist will write your card, wrap with flowers and deliver your gift to your Dad.

If you contact your florist early, then asking them to purchase the 'socks and jocks' should not be a problem. Many florists have this service. They will organize your gift and make up an absolutely fabulous arrangement in a container to suit your Dad. They will even be able to give you some ideas if you are a bit stuck on what to give Dad.

Gifts for Dad can be a little, well, boring, so let your florist change all that and make your gift so special.

You can do this any time of the year, you don't have to wait for Father's Day. A "just because" is the best occasion of all.

The Only Way to Turn New Year Resolutions Into Reality!

So you ate, drank and spent too much over the Holidays. Now you are overweight, bloated, tired and broke, and you are promising yourself that you are going to change all that this year!

There are two reasons why New Year Resolutions don't work;

<ul>

<li>1st we try and take on too much,

<li>2nd we don't believe in ourselves.

</ul>

In the world of resolutions, "Size does matter". You can turn your resolutions into realities by starting small. As the saying goes, "the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time!"

At the start of each New Year we begin by looking at our life and deciding this is the year we are going to make real changes in weight, romance, smoking, drinking, career, money, getting in shape, organizing, cleaning and more. Well, we never followed through in all the other years, so as good as our intentions and desires are our subconscious is not expecting our resolution to come true. We have conditioned ourselves to doubt our ability to change. This core lack of belief triggers a lack of commitment to action and the result is the same year after year: not pursuing our goals with consistent action.

Well you have said it before, "This year is the year I _______!" Sound familiar? You have said it and you have not done it, but there is a way to make your goals materialize. Here is Coach Steele's abbreviated "Resolution Success System!"

Step One: Learn and use this Success System. One you learn the system you can apply the system over and over again with successin every area of your life. Concentrate on the system not the goal.

Step Two: "Pick one, and get it done" as a friend of mine is fond of saying. Make sure you are picking something that you really want to achieve. You can't lose weight, stop smoking, or get an education because someone else wants you to. If you really want something you will do what it takes.

Step Three: Reduce this goal to manageable pieces. Set goals that are what you believe you can achieve in one month. Remember size does count and focusing your energy on one goal to be accomplished in 30 days gives us something tangible. If you don't believe you can do it you won't be able to.

Step Four: First write this goal down and then brainstorm to find at least 20 different actions you can take right now to achieve it. Don't skip this step! Our tendency is to take shortcuts. Do not!

Step Five: Post your written goal and the 20 ways you can achieve it on the wall in a very visible place. If we don't affirm our goals we will not achieve them.

Step Six: Study your goal and 20 actions several times a day, and visualize yourself with the results. If you can't see it you can't achieve it. Link your 5 senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch) to the goal. Make it come alive for you!

Step Seven: Act as if. Act as if you have already achieved your goal. Give yourself positive affirmations as if you have already achieved the goal. This is called telling the truth in advance.

Step Eight: Go to the posted goal everyday as often as you can, recite it out loud, visualize the result, state the affirmation and then pick activities that you will do (from your list of 20) that day to achieve it. It is all about what you do each day so resolve to put the effort in. I call this the Law of Effort.

Step Nine: Apply the Law of Consistency; do not fall into the trap of tomorrow. Start now. Not tomorrow. Not January 1st. Then, commit to yourself that you will be consistent for 30 days. After all what is 30 days?

Step Ten: Update your goal, and repeat all these steps every 30 days and expand to every goal you want!

Be enthusiastic, as Emerson said, "Nothing great is ever created without nthusiasm." These are the 10 parts of success that, if used, will guarantee your success.

Don't let this New Year end up like all the others, follow these steps and you will learn that you can develop a success system in your life.

Congratulations in advance for taking this first positive step in realizing your goals, and Happy New Year!

Make it an Unforgettable Birthday!

The first known birthday celebrations began among the Egyptians with parades, circuses, and gladiatorial events ? all complete with feasts that sometimes lasted for days. Romans celebrated the birthdays of their gods with parades and chariot races. Mortals were not encouraged to celebrate their birthdays in Rome. Germany introduced the tradition of birthday cakes about 200 years ago. The cake itself was filled with gifts that predicted the recipient's life in the upcoming year. For example, if the slice of cake contained a ring, it symbolized impending marriage. A coin guaranteed riches throughout the next year. If the cake fell while baking, it ensured impending doom to the one celebrating a birthday. Today, various countries celebrate birthdays in unique ways.

In the United States, the traditional birthday ritual calls for giving gifts to the one celebrating his special day. Selecting the &quot;right&quot; gift depends on the individual, his interests, and how well you know him. Instead of purchasing the &quot;same old&quot; thing, add a unique twist to your birthday gift selections this year and watch out for the positive feedback! Below are several ideas that you may wish to give thought to as you plan your next birthday gift list for every child, teen, or adult in your life.

-Children enjoy individual attention from important people in their lives, i.e. mom, dad, grandparent, aunt, older sibling.

-Give that special child the gift of time ? a day out with you complete with lunch, a movie, and/or shopping for the gift of their choice.

Birthday Gifts for Teens

Teens are probably the most difficult age group to buy for. Gift certificates are always a smart gift choice, although the concept requires little creativity. Implement some innovation by creating a unique presentation to an old concept.

Wolves, Goats, Martyrs and War: a History of Valentines Day

Valentines Day is one of the most enigmatic of holidays, having appeared in many forms. But all &quot;Valentine's Days&quot; have drawn suspicion. In fact, after hundreds of years of attempted reform, Christian observance came to an end when the Catholic Church purged St. Valentine's Day from its calendar in 1969.

Still, the holiday continues to inspire an annual avalanche of cards, not to mention the mass consumption of chocolates, flowers and sometimes, pricier presents. What do we commemorate when we celebrate Valentine's Day?

- Running with the Wolves

If you've ever researched the history of Valentines Day, you know it began with wolves and ancient Spring magic. The earliest instance we know of starts with the tough old shepherds and founders of Rome who feared and respected the wolves that preyed on their flocks. Once a year, they held sacrifices to Lupercus, the god of shepherds, enemy of wolves, and friend of dogs. Other shepherds sacrificed to Faunus, who also protected shepherds but was part goat.

The celebration, called Lupercalia, was held during early spring, which since time immemorial has been a season for purification. All the ancients saw that in the winter, the earth fell quiet and covered itself in white. Late winter and early spring was the time for human purification also, to be followed closely by fertility magic.

- Something Old, Something New

Rome still celebrated Lupercalia after it had matured and become a great republic. In fact, all civic life came to a halt for the festival.

Because of the Remus and Romulus legend, Lupercalia enjoyed great respect. Sons of noblemen were appointed to be Lupercalian priests, or luperci, and tasked with a number of duties. Each year they sacrified a dog (for Lupercal) and a goat (for Faunus) at the bottom of a cave at Palantine Hill. Wearing nothing but goat hide, they cut thongs from the skin and ran the perimeter of &quot;old Rome,&quot; slapping women with the bloody strips. Women put themselves forward for this, meaning to be purified and made fertile. (Our month of February, Febrarius, means &quot;month of purification.&quot;) Afterward, Rome indulged in a love lottery in which young men drew young women's names from a jar and became their &quot;partners&quot; for a time.

Eventually, the Roman upper-crust grew too refined to feel at ease with Lupercalia. Cicero sniffed that the luperci were:

-------------

A certain wild association of Lupercalian brothers, both plainly pastoral and savage, whose rustic alliance was formed before civilization and laws.

-------------

A certain politician made sport of Lupercalia's anachronistic air by wearing his luperci skin to work and haranging his fellow senators.

Eventually, Lupercalia began to fall out of favor, although Augustus revived it for a time in a fit of national patriotism.

- The Church Triumphant

The church is sometimes vilified for its Lupercalian edits. It found the love lottery unacceptable, as well as the luperci. But rather than ban the fete outright, it tried assimilation.

First, the love lottery was replaced with a high-minded version, where each man drew a saint instead of a girl and was invited to emulate that saint throughout the year. (This custom is sometimes observed today). Then the purification aspect was re-clothed in a feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary, scheduled for early February. As for fertility magic, the church dodged this altogether, although one can see traces of the purifying and &quot;greening&quot; impulse in the spirit and chapel decorations of Lent.

As for the fourteenth of February, the church dedicated the day to the Christian martyr, Valentine. Contrary to the sugared rumors that have sprung up around him (or more accurately, them -- there were several St. Valentines), the saint almost certainly had nothing to do with love or romance.

- Knights in Shining Armor

Lupercalia had been well and truly squelched in Rome. But to the west and north, where the Age of Chivalry triumphed, Europeans could not let the tradition molder and with childlike zest, revived it. The English cast off the papal practice of drawing saints, but their new notions of chivalric love led to a more innocent type of boy/girl lottery than Rome had ever seen. Young girls drew on the power of dream pillows -- filled or pinned with aromatics like bay leaves or lavender -- to catch a glimpse of their future mates. Small children dressed in adult clothes and roamed the streets, gently mocking the &quot;new&quot; fascination with love:

"Good morning to you, valentine

Curl your locks as I do mine--

Two before and three behind.

Good morning to you, valentine."

Unlike the serious Lupercalian business of patriotism and the appeasement of gods, this kinder, gentler Valentine's day spoke of a young person's coming-of-age. Chivalry's themes of chaste love and longing played major roles.

Hail, Bishop Valentine! Whose day this is

All the air is thy diocese,

And all the chirping choristers

And other birds are thy parishioners ? wrote Donne.

The world grows old over and over again, and in England, Valentine's Day aged with it. The tradition of laying out for gifts took hold, with the height of luxurious gifting possibly reaching its height around Restoration England. Lords gave Ladies rings and brooches of staggering worth, and even Samuel Pepys (not a famous romantic) recorded having given his wife &quot;a Turkey-stone set with diamonds.&quot; She was grateful, and as he noted, &quot;I am glad of it, for it is fit the wretch should have something to content herself with.&quot;

- Initially Resistant

Pragmatic, puritanical America long withstood Europe's festivities, fending off fairies, maypoles, effigy-burning and even Valentine's Day. Women were scarce in the harsh days of the nation's dawn, and public displays of affection were outlawed in any case. It wasn't until the Civil War that the country relented: long, lonely rifts in families endeared the saint to them at last. Prior to the war, elaborate commercial valentines (including &quot;mechanical&quot; types) had begun to flood the market and grow more affordable.

Of course, this uncharacteristic flood of romance could not go unchecked, and the widespread embrace of valentines was closely followed by the &quot;vinegar&quot; valentine, a comic and sometimes, caustic type.

When the war ended, and Americans crept into the light of Reconstruction, they found a freshly industrialized nation. Along with it came a transcontinental railroad, typewriters, an internal combustion engine, and -- most importantly for Valentine's Day -- heart-shaped boxes full of commercial chocolates (a gimmick invented by the Cadbury brothers during the 1860s). Although fine diamonds and jewelry never quite became the norm among Americans, the standard &quot;recipe&quot; of cards, flowers, and a heart-shaped box of chocolates had been carved in the national psyche. Now Valentine's Day is only second to Christmas in number of cards bought and sent.

Its Never Too Early To Shop For Christmas

Every year we go through the same process of making our list of people we need to buy for and agonize over those one or two people that are almost impossible to buy for. You spend all that time at the mall or online trying to find an appropriate gift that says care and attention went into this gift.

Well this year you may be able to do something a little different, especially for the ones who are hard to buy for.

Every home you go to you will see art prints, posters or photographs adorning the walls. If you go through a gallery of <a target="_new" href="http://www.artinspires.com/display_motivational.asp?c=Goals">motivational posters</a> you will find prints of all kinds that have inspirational sayings such as &quot;Goals-Dolphin, which says, There is no end to the amount of things you can accomplish&quot;. This is great for home or office. Office gifts are often the more tricky gifts and a motivational poster is the kind of gift that is beautiful and inspirational.

For the person you are buying for, are they interested in hockey, football, baseball, golf, the military, extreme sports, rock climbing, animals, flowers, ethnic art, etc.? So many areas have been covered that you should be able to find what you are looking for.

Some examples of extraordinary pictures such as a print called, Perseverance-Cliff Hanger with a saying, &quot;What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve&quot;. Or, Challenge-Runner with this saying, &quot;Winners must have two things; definite goals and a burning desire to achieve them&quot;!

Art is universal, so remember, &quot;When Art Inspires, dreams Become Reality&quot;!

The Holiday Army

Here it comes again - the Holiday Army - in its annual march against us. Some of its generals are called "Thanksgiving," "Christmas," "Hanukah," "New Year's Eve" and "New Year's Day." They are no respecters of the heartbroken and emotionally wounded, and their troops are merciless. They take no prisoners! They demand that we participate in their joy and nostalgia or they will mow us down with their militant tanks of holiday spirit.

Sometimes they declare their war on us openly - without shame or remorse. Sometimes, they wait for us in ambush. Their intelligence operators have been working diligently all year, waiting for the Thanksgiving Day (or sometimes Halloween!) trumpet signal to begin their attack. They just don't seem satisfied to have their celebrations and parties and dinners and festivities unless they can recruit ALL of us into their ranks.

Actually, we wish them well. All we really want is for them to leave us alone and let us mourn in peace and quiet. We prefer our &quot;Silent Nights&quot; to their &quot;Deck the Halls&quot; and "Jingle Bells.&quot; We don't intentionally spoil their fun, it's just that our pain makes them uncomfortable. They've been conditioned to believe that &quot;The Holiday Season&quot; should have no blemish of suffering or lack of frivolity. We must not only bandage our wounds while in their presence, but cover them with taffeta and sequins besides. They are convinced that all we need is to &quot;put on a happy face&quot; and all our sorrows will magically evaporate.

In their mad pursuit of happiness, they shoot us with the bullets of shopping, piped-in music, special holiday foods and fragrances, gift wrapping, decorations (especially the angels!), joyous children with happy smiles, cards, invitations, parties and gift exchanges. Any other time of the year, snow is considered a nuisance to shovel and plow through. At the holiday season, though, it is touted as romantic and is linked to sleighs and starry nights in front of fireplaces, snuggled close to those we love.

The most devastating bombs they drop into our lives are the images of reunion - times of greeting and hugging folks who are much loved and sometimes not often seen for awhile. They may only be separated by geography; our absent loved ones cannot cross the chasm of loss that looms before our tear-filled eyes. They remind us of things we should be thankful for (and we are more thankful for many of those things than they can ever imagine). They prod us with their spears of delightful togetherness, never realizing that what they celebrate is what we cannot now enjoy. We would not dream of attacking them in these battles for holiday survival. With our noses pressed against the glass that divides us, we actually long to be able to be part of their happiness. We remember the times we joined in their fun and we, too, were part of their army of nostalgia and joy.

Our broken hearts and bleeding wounds do not excuse us from being gracious, however. While grief does not give us permission to be rude and selfish, and we take no overt action against their aggression, we are not without defenses in these battles. We can shield ourselves with the armor of dignity with kind but direct and simple explanations: &quot;We understand your need for celebration, but this year we prefer quiet and private reflection and meditation.&quot; &quot;Right now it's hard for us to function in large groups and to appreciate laughter and high spirits.&quot; &quot;Our energy is so limited; we'd appreciate some quiet one-on-one time with you in a more spiritual atmosphere.&quot; We can gently remind them of how important it is for us to remember those we love who are gone. These are statements that clarify our position without judging or criticizing them for theirs. In kind and non-threatening ways, we need to tell them what's good for us, because they won't think of it on their own, and they can use the education.

We also can exercise the muscles of our sense of humor. It will take some effort on our part, but so does anything that is worthwhile and good for us. We can teach ourselves not to fall into the trap of thinking that our grief makes us the center of the universe. We can limit our demands that others treat us in &quot;special&quot; and &quot;deferential&quot; ways because of our pain. We can cut them a little slack and remember that once upon a time, we were just like they are now. It's good and healthy for us to review our perspectives now and then and decide if we're being fair and reasonable.

We can express our love in simple and unhurried ways without all the frenetic, expensive and often hysterical hype that the holidays can generate. And we must exercise the expression of our love. Grief does not rob us of our ability to love; it reminds us ever more dramatically of our need to both give and receive love while we are here.

Whenever we can take some control in our situations, we empower ourselves, and then we feel less like victims in what seems like a war of &quot;peace on earth, goodwill toward men.&quot; Anytime we can educate and inform with mercy and compassion, we have given a truly spiritual holiday gift of love that will keep on giving forever.

May your season be filled with genuine blessings of peace.

Create a Holiday Feast For The Senses

This is my daughter's first Christmas. Naomi will be nearly nine months old and eager to explore all that the holidays have to offer. Within a few weeks after conception, babies develop the sense of touch, with taste, smell, hearing and sight following in that order. At birth, babies possess all the senses they will have through their lives, just waiting for sensory experiences to learn about the world. The senses quickly become more acute, until adulthood when they are taken for granted. Each sense has its own role in helping create a magical memory, whether you are celebrating Solstice, Diwali, St. Lucia Day, Hanukkah, Christmas, First Night, or Festivus. This year, experience the holidays as a child again. Even if this isn't your first Christmas, you can make it joyful and loving by using all your senses.

? SEEING IS BELIEVING

Sight is the least developed sense at birth, but one we use daily without much appreciation. A thousand years ago, St. Francis of Assisi tried to explain the first Christmas to folks who didn't speak his language. The natural solution to overcome this barrier was to tell the story with images. Church cr?ches had become overly bejeweled and expensive, but Francis wanted to tell the poor about the humble beginnings of the Christ Child. And so the first live nativity was created, complete with donkey and stable, to get the point across that God's love is not reserved for the wealthy. You can use your sense of sight for a joyful holiday by attending a live performance at a local theater or driving around to find the best neighborhood light displays. Bundle up and walk outside on a wintry night to find the Star of Bethlehem shining. Decorate with bright colors and shiny ornaments. Sense the anticipation of the season with candles being lit one by one. Read children's classic stories such as The Polar Express, The Gift of the Magi, or How the Grinch Stole Christmas. And, don't get SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)? invest in some good full spectrum light bulbs to combat the winter blahs.

? HEAR THE WONDER

Sleigh bells ringing, snow crunching, reindeer munching; of all the cheerful holiday sounds, these are not the ones I remember most. It is the music of Christmas that I carry with me all year. Make your ears an active participant in the holidays this year by attending a local concert or sing-you-own Messiah. Play holiday CDs at home (or work if you dare) and sing along as loud as you can. For an instant make-your-spirits-bright, eat your lunch at a neighborhood playground and listen to children's laughter.

? SMELL THE MAGIC

When smelling an odor, you do not think, you react. The sense of smell is linked to the part of our brain that controls our emotions, breathing and heartrate and holds the longest lasting memories. It is estimated that smell is 10,000 times more sensitive than other senses. Do you remember the comforting aroma of sugar cookies baking or coffee brewing in your mom's kitchen? This Christmas, breathe in the fresh scent of evergreen wreaths, the spicy fragrance of gingerbread or the bouquet of juicy tangerines (a favorite stocking stuffer). To scent your home, make your own holiday potpourri on the stove by simply gently simmering orange slices and cinnamon sticks in a saucepot of water.

? TASTE THE JOY

Turn on the oven?turn up the joyaliciousness. Take comfort in holiday traditions by keeping a tried and true family recipe, or blaze new trails and create one of your own. Do you want to honor a cultural heritage or celebrate a different holiday this year? Try a new recipe and whip up some blinis, stuffed grape leaves, tamales, latkes, babaganoush, pad thai, or some Joululimppa. Indulge in a creamy chocolate truffle, some crunchy peppermint candy canes, or my favorite, salty Chex Party Mix. Use all your taste buds - salty, sour, sweet, bitter. Low carb? Who cares! Stop obsessing and celebrate.

? FEEL THE LOVE

Touch is the first sensation to develop in the womb and the last we lose. This Christmas, reach out and touch someone with a hug. Hugs are one size fits all, they're returnable, everybody needs one, and they're free. Don't be stingy with hugs, give them and receive them and give them again. Hugs are the only gift you can &quot;re-gift&quot; without regret. After all, this is the season of love, and what better way to show it than with hugs and some kisses thrown in for good measure. We are God's arms and legs, so use them. Volunteer at a nursing home or hospital and hold the hand of someone in need. On December 26th, when Christmas is over, and all the senses explored, I want my daughter to know the real meaning. I want her to remember the hugs and know that the joy comes from the love.

Trick or Treating Safety

Halloween is such a fun time of year for kids and adults alike, so its important that we take some precautions to keep it that way! Here's my list of trick or treating tips for your family.

Wear comfortable shoes!!

Carry a flashlight

Wear something with a reflector on it (you can even find reflector tape and paint at your local home improvement store.

Go out before dark-especially for little ones. The big kids tend to flood the streets later at night making it hard for little ones to trick or treat.

Never go into a strangers house, even if they ask you to come in while they go and get some candy.

Throw away all homemade or unwrapped treats. I know some people work hard on making great home made treats, but in this day and age its not worth the risk!

When walking down the street, have the adult walk closest to the road, and the children closest to the houses.

Do not run ahead of the adults-its very easy for children to get carried away and accidentally run into the road.

Do not pet strange animals while trick or treating. Though you really shouldn't ever pet someone's animal with out being invited to do so, you especially shouldn't during trick or treating where your costume or other costumes may be irritating or confusing to the animal.

Do not eat candy as you go.

Always be nice, even when people do not have any candy to give out.

Do not knock on doors where the lights are off.

Watch where you step!

Have a plan before you start. If you are walking in an unfamiliar neighborhood, it is easy to get lost.

When you approach a treat giving house, make sure to yell "Trick or Treat!" very loudly!

When you get home, check all of the candy before allowing children to eat any of it.

<li>unwrapped treats

<li>toys with small parts that may be a chocking hazard

<li>money (change)

<li>fruit

<li>any candy that looks like it may have been tampered with.

<li>for small children, remove any hard candies. They tend to become slick once in the mouth and can quickly become a choking hazard.

<li>lickable stamps

If you find any of the above mentioned items, its best to discard them-trust me, there will still be plenty of treats to go around afterwards!!

Valentine?s Day - Online Worship

Gazing the wide stretched blue carpet, with blows of zephyrs whispering and blowing leaves away, is the best way to rest your mind from the day-to-day hassle. It's the time when every living thing seems to grow and is nourished by the augmentation of spring. The basic demand of existence is to get inner contentment, which can be obtained by the internal & external stability of an entity. In my two optically active balls the stability desire for man & women fluctuate in many ways. Man & woman made for each other may have different attitudes for gaining inner contention but share parallel ideas for gaining eternal and sentimental contentment. This doesn't differentiate between any cast creed and race; all same one in for all. And the best way to articulate your feelings is to blast the mind-set on lovers' day so called &quot;Valentine's Day&quot;.

Every February across the whole world candies, flowers, gifts and cards are exchanged between the lovers, which is in remembrance of St. Valentine. Obviously we are living in an Islamic republic and here the concept of Christianity should not last but he has done some thing exceptional that's why every religion is celebrating this day in his respect and spreading the message, which he narrated and preached in his time. There are many beliefs about this myth and this history is still cloaked in ambiguity. St. Valentine's Day contains remnants of both Christian and ancient Roman Tradition.

Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine, all of whom were martyred. According to one myth, Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire!

According to a myth, St. Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many blood-spattered and ostracized campaigns. Claudius the brutal was having a difficult time getting armed forces to join his military leagues. He believed that the cause was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was detained and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270.

According to another legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'Valentine' greeting him self. While he was in prison, Valentine fell in love with the jailer's daughter. Many young people came to the jail to visit him and they threw flowers and notes up to St. Valentine's window. They wanted him to know that they, too, believed in love.

One of those young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit him in the cell. Sometimes they would sit and talk for hours. She helped him to keep his spirits up. She agreed that he did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day he was to die, he left a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. He signed it, "Love from your Valentine." That note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It was written on the day St. Valentine died, February 14, 270 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh -- because they know that love can't be beaten!

Since that it's been a custom in most of all societies to express their emotions and love to their beloveds. The greeting card association mentions an estimated figure of one billion about the Valentines cards, which are sent across the world. This is the second largest card-sending holiday of the year first being Christmas. Women purchase approximately 85% of all valentines' cards. Well this is a proven fact that women either black or white regardless of creed always are sensitive about the occasions of life. Whether it is their first love anniversary or breakup date, they would always think about the dates when they tied any virtual or real knot. Cupid, another symbol of holiday, as he is the son of Venus, Roman god of love.

A love seat is a wide chair, which was first made to seat one woman and her wide dress. Later the love seat or courting seat had two sections, often in an S-shape. In this way a couple could sit together.

The first Valentine message (apart from the one St Valentine wrote himself!) is thought to be a verse from Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife in 1415. He was captured at the Battle of Agincourt and was imprisoned in the Tower of London to await execution. But Valentine's Day didn't become popular in the UK until the 17th century. By the 18th century it was traditional for people to exchange handwritten messages of love. Printed cards soon replaced these, making it easier for people to say, "I love you" secretly. Charles d'Orl?ans' ballade, composed in French and English, hearkens back to Chaucer's Parliament of Fowles.

Written valentines began to appear after 1400. The oldest "valentine" in existence was made in the 1400's and is in the British Museum. Paper valentines were exchanged in Europe where they were given in place of valentine gifts. Paper valentines were especially popular in England. Early valentines were made by hand and were made with colored paper, watercolors, and colored inks.

This was all about the history of the great Valentines Day. Now lets enjoy! I mean talk about the stuff given on this eve and the celebrations across the world. On this day it's common for friends and lovers in all-social gatherings to exchange gifts flowers and hand written notes as a token of love and affection. Ready-made cards are also an easy way of expressing your emotions to your beloveds. The favorite symbols of valentine includes 'oh my love you like a red rose' which is said mostly to a women as rose is the symbol of peace, love and forgiveness. The eternal lovers are searching for their love all over and waiting for this day to come so that they can build all the courage they have to shower their love with flowers, chocolates, cards and gifts. You must have written a perfect love letter (now can be an email) may be once in a life time but I will here narrate one which is designed for those who are short of words and cant make their feelings explicable. This email has been a fruitful one and I hope same in future.

A perfect Email for your Valentine!

To My Valentine,
I hope you are in high spirits and have seen the sun shinning brighter than ever. I feel great by being the first one to wish you through an email, a very Happy Valentine's Day. I would like to confess what I was feeling since ages but didn't get the valor to speak my heart out. After a long time I have realized that the love, which we share, is not an ordinary love. It's platonic with glamour of sensuality. Today is the day when our fate brought us together and carved the same line on cups of our palms. There was a lot about you, which peaked my attention and made my heart crave for the more of you. Every day since then has been a f?te for me when your sight was over ruled by my imagination. I have many times vocalized that you have completed my world but today I will make a clean breast that you have completed me. I am now addicted to your love and all the time we have spent together, your love had showered my soul with the blessings of affection, drop by drop. My Love, when I say I love you; its not only those three words which are said by every lover but it's the voice coming from the bottom of my spirit which can only be heard by you. I am trying to convey that how much I admire you in one thousand and one ways. Thank you for being a part of me and touching my soul with the brisk of life. I want our relation to last forever, which can never be mortal, and these three words mean the zillions of words inside my heart praising your being. Our love is the backbone of our lives from now on. This Valentine's Day has brought me all the happiness, for your sight being visible and your heart being a part of me. Though we are different from each other, all that matters is that we love each other to remain one for the rest of our lives. I will continue to respect you and love you.

From Your Valentine!

Online Festivity of Valentine's Day:

What do you think about online love? Obviously love is always on the line but most powerful method of getting socially sound is, now days, through computers which is the holy modernization as is a catalyst in God's affairs. Email, Internet and Chat groups (communities) are three major examples of these catalysts. Online dating has been very common abroad and through this people can find their soul mates with the blink of eye. These are the forms which has given a rapid change to human to carve their own future and has made searching their mates easy. A number of sites have been designed specially to entangle singles that are in search and can meet, greet and feast on this special day. From friendship to marriages people are now reliable on spending their time on Internet rather than going out for a physical search. Virtual world has made every thing easy and available at doors. The attraction to &quot;online rather cyber relations&quot; are no more only for the teens or desperate men but its grabbing the attraction of sapiens on this planet. As in this era people are devoid of time and cant take time out to go physically and spend loads of time and after that all efforts going in vain as ending up in an early breakup. Many times lovers don't get time to talk about their likes and dislikes. Internet is the best way as while chatting or signing up in any community people there are from your interest and caters a wide range of ideas to be interchanged.

Not to overlook those who are still in hunt of their soul mate. Cupid will surely hit them with his arrow one day. So for those, start hunting for the partner in a party arranged for this special day. Arrange a singles' party where bid all your friends and their friends to choose amongst them. As it was done in early ages in Europe, don't through balloting but just enjoying the party along with friends and their acquaintances. If at home then think about your puppy love or crushes. Read a good love book, (my fave is Men from Mars and women from Venus) watch a romantic movie and make your favorite dish in dinner and dine with family if not going out. You can also present a gift to your parents on this occasion to tell them they mean a lot to you regardless of the fact that it is lover's day.

Online dating as mentioned earlier has been a very successful method of interaction. A famous website namely orkut is one of the hit amongst youth. It's not specifically an online dating but a community through which you can discover the old friends and search new ones. Posting of special events which are being arrange on this valentine is on the list. These events include bachelors' party, parties for couples and a lot more. Announcements of the events are also done on other sites but this is genuinely considered less fake! Red has been a color of love, passion and sentiments since ages. So you can see many of the websites loaded with the images of red balloons, flowers and hearts. Once there was a website which contained a special article on the Valentine's Day and had Cupid in its cursor. For once I thought I am now the goddess of love and can hit anyone with my arrow.

The best gift for the upcoming Valentine's Day is a romantic love announcement through Internet. It needs great courage for an introverted boy to say, 'I love you', face to face, then why not let me help you announce your undying devotion," Sun said. Sun Lin (Shanghai Star January 27, 2003) is one of the few professional short message writers in Shanghai and every week he has to frame his brain to create at least 30 love messages on the Internet. Sun admitted that he is not a love expert. In fact he felt embarrassed when, in 2000, his department leader informed him that the company planned to initiate an online business named, "Sending love through the Internet" and he has been chosen - a 20-year-old boy just graduated from college - to be responsible for creating all the content. &quot;As an occupation targeting young people, the first thing you have to know is to find out what they are pursuing. The Internet is the fastest, easiest way to achieve that", He says.

Some of the couples that met through Internet and are now happily married were interviewed. Natasha and Umair both belong to entirely different subjects of life. Natasha studying in College of business and management (CBM) and other an engineer from NED. Natasha had a problem that she never wanted to engross her self in to the arrange marriage and couldn't get the man of her choice. Even having a pretty face, she was seen always complaining about guys as she was never satisfied or when contented was afraid of the refusal. At the age of 24 she met a guy of 26 on the Internet through a chat room and her life started blooming. They started off discussing about social issues, home issues, and environmental issues then in the last their personal issues. With the duration of one year they realized that things were going smooth and they thought of tying the knot. No one has got time to rummage around, you just go online and browse communities you are interested in and click the right person to get hold of. Petite and precise!

Another true story, which BBC News covered in November 2002, was about Graham Freeman and Deb who found their love online. The two had met on Internet dating service match.com, only four months before, but 36-year-old Graham had little doubt he was falling in love. He told BBC News Online: "I think you know in a few emails if you're on the same wavelength, and after a month or two, you're 99% sure." His belief is supported by research from Internet psychologists, which suggests that getting to know each other online before meeting is a recipe for long-term stability. People do their own selection process on the Internet, so when you meet for the first time, you have a good knowledge of their interests and what makes them tick. And you have a much more flowing conversation than if you just met them in a restaurant. In life you have to be a little street smart and the Internet is no different. It's not difficult to have a conversation with someone and ask questions to see if they're real. You have to be a bit watchful, as there are few bad apples everywhere.

Have you ever thought about the fact that why many of us are under the obsessive-compulsive syndrome to which we call LOVE! Being in love with your partner because of his/her one characteristic is mostly seen but have you ever loved some one without a reason? It's hard but to love partners' some thing might have fascinated you.

One of the best ways to communicate and be open about your feelings on this day is through words. Though actions speak louder than words, if the acts can't be done then words can do wonders. A special, sentimental love poem by you or some one else, some platonic verses or quotes can surely convey your thoughts. Now there are number of websites on which thousands of poems on Valentine are narrated. You, with the click of your mouse, can get the most potent tool to electrify your beloved. Writing the perfect poem might be difficult for some people so we have valentine poem for the readers as well.

See My Love See
The Broken Arrow In The Sky,
Shining Bright & Gaily Silvered
Waiting For A Wish To Be Taken Away.
Wishing For The Aching Love To Be Blessed With
Momentarily Dazzling Glitter,
For Once The Heavenly Bodies Witnessed
The Sorrows In The Tear
And Bravery In The Fear.
The Gamut Of Emotions From The Mundane Joys
To The Eternal Despair,
Time We 've Spent More
But Memories Force To Care.
With Respect I Select You To Rule My Soul,
To Fill The Empty Vessel Of Life
Giving Any Shape You cast.
I Don't Want To Come On Scene
For The Mystifying Searching Eyes,
'Tis No Big Deal To Look Around
And Kiss The Name With Gee.
With You In My Vision I See The Farthest Point
With Your Warmth My Chilling Body
Is Able To Shelter The Ice.
Every Single Drop Of Blood On This Milestone
Thee I Sacrifice In Your Way,
Today I 'M Revealing My Ultimate Love For You,

Fathers Day Origins and Inspiration

While mothers have had their special day since 1914, fathers have only recently officially received the recognition they so richly deserve. After all, dad is the pillar of the family unit, the one who made us feel safe, loved to tickle and tease, and above all gave us a sense of security. While mom was the pillow to fall on, dad was the rock who held us up. Here are some thoughts and facts on Father's Day, dedicated to every man out there who proudly wears the name DAD.

Origins

In 1909, listening to a sermon on Mother's Day, Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd felt inspired by Anna Jarvis's efforts and felt there should also be a Father's Day. Her father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, had as a single parent raised his six children in Spokane, Washington after his wife's death. She initially suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father's death, however, she did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate and widespread. Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday in 1924 but the all-male U.S. Congress was mindful that passing a measure so favorable to males could be seen as a conflict of interest. In 1926, The National Father's Day Committee met for the first time in New York City. Lyndon Johnson made Father's Day a holiday in 1966, but the holiday was not officially recognized until the presidency of Richard Nixon in 1972 when he signed into law a permanent U.S. Father's Day to be observed on the third Sunday of June.

Inspiring Words

When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. - Mark Twain

I'm sure we all remember our teenage years and how true and insightful this statement by Mark Twain is. Here is another of my favorites:

It doesn't matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was. - Anne Sexton

What is a dad? I'm sure not everyone would answer exactly the same way but this poem by an unknown author seems to sum it up very well.

What Makes A Dad? -Unknown

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,
And then there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it - Dad.

Perhaps the most important thing a father can give us is love. Hold on to your memories of youth. Those things that your father did that made you feel so special and loved. My favorite memory is of my father coming into my room one night when I was crying. He was so concerned even though to him, my problem must have seemed insignificant. By the time he left, I was happy, and the world was a brighter place. Many of us have these kinds of memories.

Excerpt from the song Dance With My Father
Artist: Luther Vandross

Back when I was a child, before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high and dance with my mother and me and then
Spin me around 'til I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure I was loved
If I could get another chance, another walk, another dance with him
I'd play a song that would never, ever end
How I'd love, love, love
To dance with my father again.

Be sure to let your father know how much he is loved and appreciated this Father's Day.

A New Look at Labor Day

A day to reflect on the accomplishments of working people: That's been the proud tradition since the first, unofficial, Labor Day back in 1882.

But, one of labor's greatest accomplishments has gone largely unrecognized. Since the end of World War II, working people have bought up a huge chunk of big business. They now own a piece of just about everything in business, from multinational corporations to small companies that build mini-malls in their neighborhoods.

It may be the greatest economic transformation since the Industrial Revolution; management guru Peter Drucker calls it "The Pension Fund Revolution."

To get a sense of the transformation, consider this: At the end of 2001, America's 242 billionaires had assets totalling about $800 billion. That's a sizable amount, certainly, but working people had assets of $11.8 trillion in pension and mutual funds. That's almost 15 times as much as the billionaires.

Most working people contribute only modest amounts to their retirement plans, but there are simply so many of us that our collective nest egg grew very quickly. If you're still not sure, try this on your calculator: Multiply a contribution of $1,000 per year by one million working people. Answer: $1 billion dollars per year. Now note there are hundreds of millions of working people here and in other countries. And we're contributing new money every year.

Even a relatively small number of working people can build a big fund. For example, the New York State Common Retirement Fund, with 944,000 members in or retired from state public services, had assets of $112 billion at the end of March last year. According to the Fund's annual report for 2002, about $76.6 billion of that total was invested in companies. The remainder, about $35 billion, was in bonds, mortgages, and other types of loans.

Look at the private sector and unions, too. To cite just a couple of examples, Pensions & Investments magazine estimated that General Motor's pension fund had assets of $82.5 billion and the pension fund of the Western Conference Teamsters had assets of $22.6 billion, at September 30, 2001.

This ownership of big business by working people is the result of contributions to pension funds, mutual funds, and life insurance policies with a savings component.

What does all this mean? Well, for starters, perhaps an end of complaints about the profits of corporations. After all, most of those profits go toward the retirement incomes of working people.

More complicated, though, is the relationship between working people who own a big company and other working people employed by it. How to share corporate profits -- through continuing employment and higher wages, or through higher returns to shareholders -- remains a difficult issue. Especially for those working people who lose their jobs.

On the other side of the coin, working people have bought enough stocks and shares to become the bosses of the bosses. Some pension funds have begun making that clear; CalPERS, the California Public Employees' Retirement System, has led the way in telling Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and boards of directors that they'd better manage effectively. And, CEOs and directors listen; after all CalPERS runs the country's biggest pension fund, with assets of more than $130 billion.

One other thing: if you're a working person, you're a consumer, as well as an owner and employee. When you go shopping, there's a chance you'll buy from a business owned by yourself, your friends, or your neighbors. What's more, the clerks who take your credit card with smiles may work for you. Holiday Health: Give Get-Fit Gifts

'Tis the season to celebrate -- and a time to eat! Most of us gain a few pounds during the holiday season. With family dinners, holiday parties and gift baskets loaded with goodies, who thinks of staying fit?

Instead of giving a pyramid of chocolate, a basket of tempting treats or a bottle of bubbly this year, why not be different? Give your loved ones a Holiday Health Kit to start out the New Year right.

With so many inexpensive or low-cost fitness products available, it's easy to combine several items into a customized Get-Fit Gift. Louise Roach, marketing director at SnowPack, a New Mexico-based company that manufactures ice therapy kits, has several suggestions:

&quot;If you have someone on your Christmas list who likes to walk or run, think of items like a pedometer, a gift certificate to your local running specialty store, energy bars, a water bottle, a portable CD player, books on stretching, sunscreen, and lip balm. Plus an ice pack just in case they overdo it. Put it all together in a nifty duffel bag and you have a very thoughtful gift.

&quot;Maybe someone you know needs motivation to get up and get going. Why not give a 'home gym in a bag'? A few suggestions to include are: free weights, a jump rope, resistance bands, workout videos, a yoga mat, a BMI scale, a heart rate monitor, sport drinks, and protein bars. Of course every home gym needs first aid in the form of an ice therapy product to take care of strained muscles. Then wrap it all up in a bright tote bag for giving.

&quot;Several other themes for Get-Fit Gifts could be biking, hiking and backpacking. A visit to your local athletic store can offer many ideas such as a day pack, water carrying system, socks, hats, compass (or GPS system), utility tool, first aid kit, a spa product and destination books.&quot;

With a little creativity, you can put together healthy, useful gifts that will be well appreciated throughout the New Year.

Keeping it Simple this Season

It's back. The holiday season and all the challenges that come with it! This is the time when we are most tempted to overdo things - shopping, partying, spending.

This year?why not practice the art of simplicity and serenity? Begin a new tradition or fine tune an old one. Think 'less is more'? quality over quantity.

Remember that this is a time to celebrate love, connection, tradition and new beginnings. Make this a holiday season to remember and cherish. Pay attention to what really matters this time of the year and always? your family and friends, your health and well-being, your connection to the divinity of a universal spirit who gave us a holiday season just so we could help ourselves to platefuls of joy and love.

Q. I love this idea! But how do I get started on creating a new tradition?

A. Make a list of your most deeply felt intentions for the season. A better relationship with family? A chance to enjoy a holiday without stress and conflict? The willingness to take in the generosity of others? Light a candle daily. Choose a sophisticated blend of freshly cut balsam, frankincense, spiced cranberry and orange reminiscent of the season or one that evokes a calm and meditative state ? a relaxing, soothing scent of peppermint, verbena and lavender. As you light the candle ask for the presence of mind to keep these intentions in mind during the season and all year long.

Q. I always spend more money than I intend and yet still feel that somehow I missed getting the ideal gift.

A. Set a budget and track your spending. This doesn't sound like much fun but when you determine exactly how much you want to spend and then actually spend just that amount, this will be the best holiday you ever had!

Sometimes we need to remember to shop with our heart and soul, to use a kind of intuition or 'gut' wisdom to choose a gift. Narrow your shopping field to one store or product. Think quality vs. quantity. If your gift-giving follows this intention, you can't go wrong. Your choices will be in tune with the person you want to please while naturally keeping to the budget you set for yourself.

Q. I have so much to do this time of the year I miss out on all the 'cheer'.

A. Perhaps pass up a party and go shopping instead. Make shopping a social activity. Stop for a coffee or tea. Reminisce about holidays past. Wander and chat, admire the window displays, the mall decorations, and the twinkling lights. If you long for the romance and simplicity of holidays long ago, step back in time. Just the lingering scents and beauty of the season will inspire a festive and relaxing mood.

Q. Since my family lives far away and my children are grown I am having a hard time finding joy in this holiday season.

A. Transitions are never easy. We want to get them over with as soon as possible yet this, interestingly enough, only prolongs them. Consider instead appreciating where you are right now. Practice being ok with the sadness or grief that comes with losing the routines of the past. Do not resist the pain. While pain is a natural part of life ? suffering is not. And suffering comes when we resist the natural pain of life. Be gentle with yourself. Hold yourself with kind regard. Pamper yourself with the sanctuary of a bath. The combination of delicate scents and warm water are soothing, nurturing and relaxing. When you are relaxed and refreshed, your new holiday season traditions will flow more easily.

Q. I can't just sit still when there's so much to do ? yet I long to do just that! Help!

A. Yes, many women are so accomplished at 'doing' and 'striving' that we neglect the part of us that wants to 'receive', to take it all in and be still for a time. While taking up such practices as meditation during the holidays might be too much of a challenge consider finding just a minute or two to stare at a snowfall, take in the tree lights, meditate on the Menorah, agree with the angels and pray for peace.

For those who are especially challenged by sitting still, consider sitting still AND doing something at the same time! Watch all those corny holiday specials. Yes, even the cartoons, the original version of Miracle on 34th Street, and the classic It's a Wonderful Life. Be open to their simple but timeless message and let them warm you all over. And resist doing anything else while you watch the show!

Q. Every year I say I'm going to take time off from work for the holidays and every year I don't.

A. Explore why you stay at work. Do you fear all hell will break out if you take a day off? That no one can possibly cover for you? That you will worry all day about the job so what is the point of taking a day off? Generally these beliefs are not accurate or are based on a black and white perspective that has us convinced that something so terrible will happen if we are not at work and we will NEVER recover from it. Ask yourself, &quot;Is this true?&quot; Yes, you are in all likelihood the best woman for the job and yes, something could go wrong but will it DEFINITELY be a disaster? Not likely. Observe when you are in an all-or-nothing, always-and-never, black-and-white-perspective and ask: Is this true? It can change your life over night!

So take a risk and take some time off. Enjoy a day of baking cookies and sweets, making decorations, or doing a craft -- without fitting them in between work, chores, and shopping. Do one thing at a time. Meet the challenge of single tasking. The rewards are immeasurable.

Q. It is so hard to celebrate with some of the bad things going on in the world.

A. We live in a time of incredible mass communication. But we have choices. Limit all news especially bad news. Watch a half-hour of news instead of 8 hours of CNN. Scan the newspapers and magazines headlines and read only what makes you feel good as well as informed. Acknowledge your fears for the future, find the courage in the peace and warmth of the season, and make a decision to celebrate in a bold and determined way!

Q. I love choosing my holiday cards ? picking out just the right ones and sitting down with a cup of tea and cookies to write them out. But each year this becomes less of a pleasure and more of a pain.

A. Consider limiting your card list so you can still enjoy the ceremony and ritual of this tradition within the context of your realistic schedule. Break it into 3 lists:

List 1 - Write an old-fashioned, put-a-stamp-on-it letter to those you are especially missing this time of the year. Use some festive paper, a favorite writing tool and your best penmanship.

List 2 - Send cards to those who live far away to tell them you are thinking of them. Be discriminating. Do not include the people you hear from once in a blue moon and resist the compulsion to send a card to someone JUST because they sent you one.

List 3: Send everyone else a lovely email greeting.

Q. While I like the holidays I have a difficult time with the dark days and cold weather winter. I am more of a 'summer' person and this time of the year makes me long for the dog days of summer!

A. You are not alone. Many of us are warm weather, sun worshipers. Here's where you need your imagination and some help. Create a summer sanctuary stash with fragrance such as Crab Tree and Evelyn's Summer Hill productsl! Surround you and your home with the scent of summer evoking the memory of peach blossoms and bouquets of summer lilies, wildflowers and tuberose.

Q. This all sounds so good but is it realistic to have the kind of holiday I really, really want?

A. YES. It is all about choices ? your underutilized super power! Start with scrutinizing your schedule. Ask yourself, "Is this activity obligation or choice?" If you come up with too many "obligation" answers, re-think your priorities. Set firm boundaries about what you willingly want to do and do just those things. It will be difficult at first but once you reap the rewards of an ideal holiday you will be motivated to use your powers of choice all the time!

Q. I want to find a way to let my spiritual self guide the holidays in a comfortable way.

A. Consider saying grace at mealtime. It doesn't have to be elaborate, formal or long. Just express your gratitude for the meal before you, the people with you and the good fortune to enjoy both. Oh and don't forget to acknowledge your good sense to stop and smell the roses or the holiday turkey!

Mothers Day is coming-Dont Blow It!

Mother's Day is May 8th. And, you do realize all of the things that the Mom in your life has done for you and your family, right? Then you must know that a bouquet of flowers and card, though very sweet, are not all it takes to make Mother's Day a true holiday.

To make Mother's Day special for any Mom in your life, try some of these tips:

1. Watch the kids! Think of giving a &quot;Kid Free Night&quot; Coupon or taking the kids to the park for a few hours.

2. Cook ? No mother should ever have to cook on Mother's Day, so plan ahead. Pick out something for everyone to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It doesn't have to be fancy, just one less thing for Mom to worry about on her special day.

3. Pick up after the kids. Come on, now, if Mom is supposed to feel pampered on this one day of the year, why should she have to pick anything up? Leaving the mess, though, will likely cause her stress, so help out by picking up.

4. Ask-Ahead of time, ask her what she wants to do. You may be surprised at her answer. Even if it's something you hate, just think of all of the boxing matches and football games she has smiled through.

5. Be Nice. All relationships have their good days and their bad days. On Mother's Day, no matter what, don't argue with a Mom. Its only 24 hours, you can handle it.

6. Have fun with it. Blow up balloons, throw a barbeque (where no Moms are allowed to help cook or clean up), make banners, buy a cake, play music, hide her shoes and force her to wear fuzzy slippers all day with a paper crown made by the kids, just make sure that she knows that this is her day!

7. Buy her something that she will cherish. Don't buy her something that she will have to use to cook or clean unless she has absolutely requested it, and then I still wouldn't. All Moms love to look at their families, especially their children, so look into personalized or photo gifts-put some real thought into it.

Mother's day should not be just another day with a few flowers thrown in. Moms spend their lives taking care of the people that they love, so one day of fun, pampering and rest should not be too much to expect. Trust me, if you follow these tips, the mom in your life won't be struggling to remember next time she's asked, &quot;What did you get for Mother's Day?&quot;

Gypsy Fortune Teller Halloween Costumes ? Easy to Make

As a little girl I often loved to dress up as a gypsy, whether it was for Halloween or just for play. Maybe it's because I long to be free to do as I want and go where I wish, without the societal constraints we have to live by (that's why pirates are so fascinating to people too). Whatever it is, creating a fortune teller costume was the highlight of Halloween.

Back then there weren't many places to buy fancy costumes (nor did we have the money), so putting my own costume together was a bit of a challenge. Today we can purchase practically any costume we can think of and there are some pretty nice fortune teller Halloween costumes to choose from.

** A Brief History of Gypsy Costumes **

The gypsy people were called Roma or Romani. They are made up of loose nomadic tribes that wandered much of the European countries during the Middle Ages and often lived in caravans. There are still nomadic gypsies in the world today.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the basic dress of the woman was a simple robe gathered at the neck worn over an under gown made of chemise. They also wore a length of cloth which was draped down the back, around the opposite waist, up the front and tied at the shoulder (think Roman toga). A turban was worn on the head.

As time went on, fashions changed. For the most part, gypsies actually dressed very similar to the peasants of the area in which they traveled and cultural dress of the time. Most of the style of gypsy clothing that we picture today probably came from the Renaissance period when laced vests, flounced skirts, men's breeches and pirate shirts were more popular.

** Making a Gypsy Halloween Costume **

For those that want to put together their own gypsy costume or are planning on being a &quot;fortune teller&quot; for Halloween this year, you may have to do a bit of shopping around at used clothing stores for some items. If you are handy with a sewing machine, there are many fortune teller costume patterns available as well. Here are some suggestions for both men and women (and boys/girls) that can easily be created once you get all the items:

Women/Girl's Fortune Teller/Gypsy Outfit 1

* Long tired skirt in a bright color.

* Gypsy style shirt ? gathered scooped neck, puffy sleeves gathered at the wrist or long wide flowing sleeves

* Brightly colored front-laced vest

* Black leotard stockings

* Black shoes

* Brightly colored sash for the waist

* Matching bandana for hair

* Gold hoop earrings and some long, colorful beaded necklaces, bangles for arms

Women/Girl's Fortune Teller/Gypsy Outfit

* Long wide-flowing black skirt

* White peasant's shirt

* Black front-laced vest

* Black stockings

* Black shoes

* Brightly colored apron or a shorter overskirt

* Long black wig with tight ringlets or curls

* Colored 2&quot; to 3&quot; wide headband

* Gold hoop earrings and some long, colorful beaded necklaces, bangles for arms

Men/Boys Gypsy/Pirate Costume

* Black or brown breeches

* Black boots

* White pirate shirt

* Long-length black or brown vest preferably trimmed with a gold-colored braiding

* Red or another colorful long scarf for the sash at the waist

* Colorful bandana

* One gold hoop earring

Let your imagination run wild with the colors and styles you could mix and match. The trick is to dress in layers and use clothing that is loose and flowing. Add jewelry like bangles, long flowing necklaces, large earrings and ankle bracelets to enhance your outfit. Use colorful sashes accent the waist (and also to hold daggers). Women could drape several sheer scarves from their waist to hang down in points around a solid colored skirt. Include headbands, bandanas and even eye patches for that gypsy pirate look. Purples, blues, greens, bright yellows, reds and blacks are the most popular colors and will make your outfit stand out.

Learn a bit about fortune telling and divination and you'll be all set to play the part of the gypsy fortune teller.

Buying Jewelry for Mother?s Day or How To Buy The Perfect Gift for Mom Without Getting Ripped Off

Jewelry can be the perfect gift for mom on Mother's Day, but there are pitfalls, especially if you rush at the last minute. Procrastination and a lack of knowledge can be rewarded with overpaying for a piece of jewelry or even worse, being ripped-off.

A gift of jewelry can be expensive. Asking friends, family and co-workers if they can recommend a website, brick and mortar store or local crafts person can help. Checking with the better business bureau is also a commendable approach.

When you are shopping, ask the salesperson to write down any information you might rely on to make your purchase and before you buy, ask for the store's refund and return policy. When ordering online, keep printouts of the web pages with details about the transaction, including refund and return policies if you're not satisfied.

Six Smart Shopping Tips for Mother's Day and Beyond

1. There's a big difference between 14 karat gold and gold-plated jewelry. Fourteen karat (14K) jewelry contains 14 parts of gold, mixed in throughout with 10 parts of base metal. Gold-plated describes jewelry with a layer of at least 10K gold bonded to a base metal. Gold plating eventually wears away, depending on how often the item is worn and how thick the plating is.

2. If you're buying a watch, determine whether you want one that runs on a battery or one that must be wound daily. Ask if a warranty or guarantee is included, how long it lasts, and what parts and repair problems it covers. Also ask how and where you can get the watch serviced and repaired.

3. Know the difference between laboratory-created gemstones and naturally mined stones. Stones created in the lab are visually identical to stones mined from the earth. The big difference is in the cost: laboratory-created stones are less expensive then naturally mined stones. But because they look must like stones mined from the earth, they must be identified as lab-created. If you want a naturally mined stone, ask if it has been treated. Gemstone treatments? such as heating, dyeing or bleaching? can improve a stone's appearance or durability. Some treatments are permanent; some may create special care requirements. Treatments also may affect the stone's value.

4. Ask whether pearls are imitation or real. Real pearls are made by oysters or other mollusks; imitation pearls are man-made. Cultured pearls are made by mollusks with human intervention; and irritant introduced into their shells causes a pearl to grow. Real pearls that are not cultured are fairly rare and expensive. The cost depends on the size, usually stated in millimeters, and the coating or &quot;nacre&quot; on a real pearl, which gives it its iridescence.

5. When you're buying a diamond, consider four criteria: cut, color, clarity and weight, usually stated as carats. Each factor affects the price. Color is sometimes &quot;graded&quot; on a scale. However, scales are not uniform: a &quot;D&quot; may be the best color for one scale, but not for another. Make sure you know how a particular scale and grade represent the color of the diamond you're considering. A diamond can be described as &quot;flawless&quot; only if it has no visible surface cracks or other imperfections when viewed under 10-power magnification by a skilled diamond grader.

6. One final tip, Mom's love longer (i.e. 24") gold or sterling chains with gemstone pendants. And you can almost never go wrong with the very popular omega-style chains in various widths in sterling silver or gold.
